Why Silverado Bumpers Mislead Tahoe and Suburban Owners
GM restyled the Silverado and Sierra for 2003. New grille, new headlights, new front fascia. The Tahoe and Suburban did not follow. They carried the original 2000 front end all the way to 2006, when the new body arrived.
Our own catalog shows it. Ranch Hand builds one bumper, part FSC99HBL1. It is listed for the 1999-2002 Silverado 1500 and for the 2000-2006 Suburban and Tahoe. The pickup fit stops at 2002 because the face changed. The SUV fit runs to 2006 because it never did.
Work from your own truck, not from a pickup that looks close. Every front bumper here covers 2001 through 2006. Check the body line too, since a few parts are cut for the Suburban alone.
Z71 Fog Lights Decide Your Front Bumper
The Z71 package puts fog lights in the lower front valance. That one detail sorts the Summit from the Original.
Ranch Hand Summit, 193 pounds, $1,744.95. Diamond plate and thick-wall 4-inch schedule 40 pipe, welded into one piece, with a guard that wraps the grille and reaches over the headlights. It covers both the Tahoe and the Suburban. Two limits. It will not accommodate Z71 fog lights, and it will not fit a truck with a body lift.
Frontier Original, 185 pounds, $1,847.50. A black powder coated front for the Suburban, no drilling. It keeps the factory tow hooks and the factory fog lights. If your Z71 fogs stay, this is the front that lets them.
Keep the fogs, or cover more of the front end. That is the trade.
Winch Front Bumpers: Low Profile, Pre-Runner, Full Brush Guard
Hammerhead builds the winch fronts, all from 3/16-inch steel plate with a two-stage black powder coat. Each mounts up to four 3.5-inch square off-road lights. The guards use 1.75-inch tubing with a 0.120-inch wall. Every style comes as two part numbers, one for the Tahoe and one for the Suburban. Weight and price climb with the steel above the bumper.
Low Profile, 174 pounds, $1,934.10. No guard at all. A clean look with a winch behind it.
Pre-Runner, 189 pounds, $2,060.10. A tube hoop across the grille, with mounting points for lights on the bar.
Full Brush Guard, 214 pounds, $2,573.10. The X-Series brush guard, the most steel of the three. Hammerhead does not guarantee clearance around the outer tubes for oversized fender flares.
One install note on all three. The factory low-speed impact guards need trimming to clear some winches. Plan for that before the winch goes on.
Rear Bumpers Split on Lights and Weight Class
Three rear bumpers to choose between, and they answer the lighting question three different ways.
Hammerhead standard rear, 147 pounds, $1,547.10. Quarter-inch steel plate. It includes reverse lights and tag lights, plus steps and shackle mounts welded through the mounting surface.
Hammerhead flush mount, 117 pounds, $1,547.10. Same quarter-inch plate, thirty pounds lighter, same price. It carries tag lights, steps and shackle mounts. Flush-mount LEDs are a separate order.
Ranch Hand Legend, $914.95. Diamond plate and 4-inch pipe with an 8-inch skirt, rated to a 1,000-pound tongue weight and 10,000 pounds of towing. A bolt-on receiver is optional. It has no backup lights, so the factory reverse lamps go away.
The Legend carries one more limit worth reading twice. Ranch Hand lists it for 2500 trucks, the three-quarter-ton models on 8-lug axles. Chevy built the Suburban in both 1500 and 2500 for these years. The Tahoe came as a 1500 only. So on any Tahoe on this page, the Legend is not your rear bumper. The Hammerhead rears are.
Ranch Hand and Frontier both list a no-drill install, and Ranch Hand packs the mounting kit and instructions in the box. Most of these run 117 to 214 pounds, so have a second set of hands ready and somewhere clear to set the steel down. Shipping is free in the US. Match the part to your year and your body. Reinforce the front first. The other years live on the full Chevy Tahoe and Suburban bumpers page.
Frequently Asked Questions
I have a 2000 Tahoe or Suburban. Does anything on this page fit?
Yes, in part. All four Hammerhead rear bumpers start at 2000, and so do the Ranch Hand Summit and Frontier Original fronts. The Hammerhead winch fronts are the exception, listed 2001 through 2006. For the full 2000 lineup, see the 1988-2000 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban page.
Do I need a winch to run a Hammerhead front bumper?
No. The Hammerhead fronts accept a winch, but they mount and look right without one. Add the winch later if you want. When you do, expect to trim the factory low-speed impact guards to clear it. Hammerhead flags that on all three fronts.
Can one front bumper cover both the Tahoe and the Suburban?
Ranch Hand does it with one part, FSC99HBL1, listed for both trucks. Hammerhead splits each style into two part numbers instead, one for the Tahoe and one for the Suburban. The Frontier Original is listed for the Suburban. The Hammerhead rears come as separate parts for each truck too. Order by your truck, not by the style alone.
