Warn or Superwinch: Which Winch Belongs on Your Truck?

A Warn 16.5ti-s winch on the front of a Ford, its rope run out to a Jeep in the snow, a gloved hand holding the remote

Updated October 2026. Prices are from our shelf this month, rounded to the dollar.

This summer, a 2020 GMC 2500HD owner asked us about a 12,000-pound Warn winch and a Warn bumper. In his words: "I know nothing about winches." The winch on his '95 F350 has been used once in 12 years. He also asked: "is this winch quality?"

It is a good winch. But it was too small for his truck, and the bumper he asked about could not take a bigger winch. That matters more than the brand, and we come back to his truck at the end. You have probably also heard that Warn winches cost twice as much as Superwinch winches. Size for size, Warn's everyday VR EVO costs at most $76 more than Superwinch's SX.

Warn or Superwinch, short version
  1. Find your size. Read the GVWR on your door sticker. It is the most your truck may weigh loaded. Multiply it by 1.5. The answer is the smallest winch rating to buy. Your size
  2. Heavy-duty trucks need a big winch. Warn's 16.5ti suits trucks with a door sticker up to 11,000 pounds. Superwinch's Tiger Shark 18000 suits up to 12,000. It costs about half as much, with a shorter electrical warranty. Heavy-duty
  3. The everyday lines cost about the same. At 12,000 pounds with steel cable, Warn's VR EVO 12 is $885 and Superwinch's SX12 is $809. The warranty runs just as long. The big gaps are Warn's upper ZEON tiers and heavy-duty sizes. Side by side
  4. Steel or synthetic rope. Synthetic is lighter and costs about $200 more. Warn says steel may be the better pick if you rarely winch. Which rope
  5. The bumper sets the limit. Find the biggest winch your bumper takes before you buy the winch. Bumper check

What Size Your Truck Needs

Both brands use the same rule: the GVWR on your door sticker times 1.5. A winch pulls less as its rope winds back on. So when the math lands between sizes, pick the bigger size.

Your truck Winch size, and what fits
Midsize
Tacoma, Colorado, Ranger
Sticker: 5,600 to 6,850 lb
10,000 lb for most.
Warn VR EVO 10 or Superwinch SX10
Most Tacoma hybrids or a Ranger Raptor: go 12,000.
Half-ton
F150, Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500, Ram 1500, Tundra
Sticker: 6,200 to 7,800 lb
12,000 lb for most.
Warn VR EVO 12 or Superwinch SX12
F150 Lightning, sticker up to 8,600 lb: 14,000 and up.
Heavy-duty
F250, F350, Ram 2500 and 3500, Silverado HD, Sierra HD
Sticker: 8,500 to 14,000 lb
Each winch covers a sticker up to:
Warn M15: 10,000 lb
Warn 16.5ti: 11,000 lb
Superwinch Tiger Shark 18000: 12,000 lb
Heavier: add a snatch block.

On a heavy-duty truck, that math lands between about 13,000 and 21,000 pounds. That is why the 12,000-pound Warn was too small for the GMC. Some trucks carry a sticker over 12,000 pounds. For them, no single 12-volt truck winch from either brand is big enough. You add a snatch block, a pulley that lets the same winch pull nearly double.

At heavy-duty sizes, the rumor is about right. Superwinch's Tiger Shark 18000 pulls 18,000 pounds on steel cable for $1,439. Warn's M15 and 16.5ti, also on steel cable, run $2,677 and $2,975. The Warns carry 7 years on the electrical parts, and the Tiger Shark 3 years. The GMC owner has used the winch on his F350 once in 12 years. For him, the Tiger Shark does the job for about half the winch money. Some owners winch every season. If their sticker reads 11,000 pounds or less, the 16.5ti's longer warranty and the heat light on its remote are worth paying for.

Warn VR EVO vs Superwinch SX

For midsize and half-ton trucks, the everyday winches are Warn's VR EVO and Superwinch's SX. They match at 10,000 and 12,000 pounds. The 4 matching pairs differ by $14 to $76.

Size and rope Warn VR EVO Superwinch SX
10,000 lb, steel cable $742 $728
12,000 lb, steel cable $885 $809
10,000 lb, synthetic rope $950 $917
12,000 lb, synthetic rope $1,070 $998
Warranty Limited lifetime mechanical, 7 years electrical Limited lifetime mechanical, 7 years electrical
Sealing Sealed against dust and water (IP68) Sealed against dust and water (IP68)
Remote and extras A remote that works with or without the cord Wired remote (wireless with synthetic rope), a light on the drum

On steel cable, only the Warn comes with a wireless remote; Superwinch's manual lists it for the synthetic SX only. If you don't need it, the SX costs less.

Steel Cable or Synthetic Rope?

Synthetic rope costs about $200 more at the same size. Warn calls it "a great product if you winch frequently and are concerned about weight." It is lighter, and it does not snap back as hard if it breaks. Steel stands up better to scraping. Warn says steel "may be a better choice if you don't use your winch very frequently."

What Warn's Upper Tiers Add

Warn ranks its main truck winches in 3 tiers: VR EVO, ZEON XD and ZEON XP. Its heavyweight winches are a separate class. The top 2 tiers are where Warn's big prices live. On a midsize or half-ton, the ZEON XD and XP pay off if you winch most weekends or pull other trucks out. For size alone, the VR EVO or the SX covers most of these trucks.

All 4 pull 12,000 pounds. The everyday pair is $72 apart. Warn's ZEON tiers add $710 to $1,610 over the VR EVO.

What the extra buys, per Warn:

  • ZEON XD: at 12,000 pounds, it reels the rope in about 18% faster with nothing on the hook. Warn rates its gears twice as durable as the VR EVO's. You can also run it from your phone.
  • ZEON XP: all of that, plus a clutch you work from the remote. It also shows motor heat and load while you pull.
  • M12, M15 and 16.5ti: Warn's heavyweight winches, with bigger gears and drums, rated 12,000 to 16,500 pounds. A light on the 16.5ti's remote shows motor heat.

Warn's own summary: "VR EVO is a good winch. ZEON XD is better. However, we stand behind both with the same warranty and service levels."

Where Each Brand Started

Warn started in 1948 and built its first winch in 1959. Today it also owns Fab Fours, the bumper maker. Superwinch started in 1970. Since 2019 it has been part of Westin Automotive, the company behind Westin bumpers.

Check the Bumper's Winch Rating

Look for the biggest winch the bumper takes, on its listing or the maker's install sheet. Superwinch's own manual says: "Ensure the winch mount/bumper is rated for your vehicle weight and pulling power of the winch."

Warn's VR EVO and ZEON lines bolt to a 10 by 4.5-inch pattern. Superwinch's SX and smaller Tiger Sharks do too, so mixing brands can work, as long as the size and the rating fit. The Tiger Shark 18000 adds a second, larger 10 by 6.7-inch bolt pattern. Check that the bumper takes it. Our winch-ready bumper guide lists ratings by brand.

  • Half-ton trucks: Warn's Ascent front bumper takes most of Warn's regular-size winches "up to 12,000 lbs." Westin's Pro-Series front bumper takes most winches up to 12,000 pounds. A 12,000-pound rating covers every half-ton but the F150 Lightning.
  • Midsize trucks: a bumper rated for 10,000 pounds covers most. Most Tacoma hybrids and the Ranger Raptor need 12,000.
  • Heavy-duty trucks: pick a bumper rated for at least your winch. The Ascent the GMC owner asked about tops out at 12,000 pounds. Warn also makes an Ascent HD for his GMC. Its mount is rated to 18,000 pounds and takes the 16.5ti. If his sticker reads 11,000 pounds or less, a 16.5ti on that bumper covers him. For a Tiger Shark 18000, send us the truck and we will confirm a bumper that takes it.

Questions We Get

Is Superwinch a good brand of winch?
Yes. Its SX winches carry a warranty as long as Warn's. The SX is sealed against dust and water, and its automatic brake holds a full load.

Are Warn winches good quality?
They are. Warn's truck winches carry a limited lifetime warranty on the mechanical parts and 7 years on the electrical. Warn also sells service parts, so a VR EVO or ZEON XD can be repaired instead of replaced.

Can I put a Superwinch on a Warn bumper?
You can, if the size and the rating fit. Superwinch's SX and smaller Tiger Sharks use the same 10 by 4.5-inch bolt pattern as Warn's regular-size winches. Warn lists only its own winches for its bumpers. Send us the bumper and the winch, and we will check the fit.
