No. Your warranty doesn't come off with the factory bumper. A 1975 federal law protects you. A dealer can refuse a repair because of your bumper only if the bumper, or the way it went on, caused the problem. And the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the agency that enforces that law, says the dealer has to prove it. Everything the bumper didn't break stays covered, same as before.
The rumor says a single bolt-on part kills the whole warranty. It doesn't work that way. Every repair gets judged on its own. Here's how it splits:
Bumper didn't cause it
✓Warranty pays
Same as on a stock truck.
Bumper or a bad install caused it
!You pay for it
Only that part. The rest stays under warranty.
Why the Dealer Can't Void It
The law is called the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. It says a truck maker can't force you to use its own parts to keep your warranty, unless it gives you those parts for free. The FTC puts it plainly on its auto warranty page: "Your warranty stays in effect if you use aftermarket or recycled parts." Aftermarket just means made by someone other than your truck's maker. A steel bumper counts.
There's a fair exception. If an add-on part breaks, or goes on wrong, and damages something the warranty covers, that repair can be refused. But the proof is on them: "The manufacturer or dealer must prove the aftermarket or recycled part caused the damage before they can deny warranty coverage." The FTC's own reading of the law adds the flip side: if the part had nothing to do with the problem, the maker can't wiggle out of the repair.
Even the truck makers say so, in their own 2026 warranty books:
| Truck maker | What its own book says |
|---|---|
| Ford Warranty Guide, p.17 |
It won't pay for damage your changes cause, or when an add-on part "fails or causes a Ford part to fail." |
|
Chevy and GMC Warranty booklet, p.11 |
Only the parts the install "damaged or otherwise affected" lose coverage. |
|
Ram Warranty booklet, p.16 |
It files a front bumper change under "Some Modifications Do Not Void The Warranties But Are Not Covered". In plain words: the warranty stays, but Ram won't pay for repairs or adjustments the bumper causes or needs. |
|
Toyota Tacoma owner's manual |
Same rule as the FTC: Toyota must first show the add-on part caused the damage. Its manual adds that this rule doesn't cover a new truck bought only for business (more in Quick Answers). |
And makers who ignore this get caught. Harley-Davidson's 2021 warranty, quoted in an FTC complaint, told riders to use only Harley parts "to keep your Harley-Davidson motorcycle and its limited warranty intact". In 2022 the FTC made Harley print the opposite: "Also, using third-party parts will not void this warranty." Third-party parts just means parts made by other companies.
Install Day: Keep the Answer No

On Tundras.com, a 2022 Tundra owner put on a steel front bumper and a 3-inch lift. Then his front parking sensors started acting up, and he says the dealer called the bumper "the root cause". That's the yes you want to avoid. Close each spot:
- Wiring. GM's Silverado 1500 manual says that if added electrical gear damages the truck, the repair "would not be covered by the vehicle warranty." So hook up the winch exactly the way its instructions say. Give lights their own wiring and switch, or use the extra switches some trucks come with for this. Your owner's manual shows how.
- Sensors, camera and radar. Parking sensors, the front camera and the radar for adaptive cruise (the cruise control that keeps your distance) are 3 different things. Check each one on the bumper's listing. Ford's F150 manual says a blocked radar stops working. Some bumpers leave a cutout for the radar, others move it on a bracket. If yours moves, budget for re-aiming it: Ram's book says adjustments an install needs aren't covered. Ask the shop for that price first. Our sensor guide has a 5-minute check.
- Weight. A steel bumper plus a winch adds real weight up front. The sticker on your driver's door frame lists the most your front axle can carry. Ram's manual warns that if you go past it, "parts on your vehicle can break". Our weight guide shows how to check.
- The mounts. Read the fit notes on the listing before you order. Some bumpers need trimming. GM's warranty won't pay for damage that comes from cutting, welding or disconnecting factory parts. So follow the instructions exactly, and take a photo of any cut.
Then keep a small folder: the receipt, the instructions and a few dated photos from before, during and after.
If the Service Desk Says No
Sometimes the service desk says no anyway. Don't argue. Ask for the cause in writing:

You
That puts the job where the law puts it: a real answer names a part and a cause. The FTC has said that just claiming the part did it, with nothing to back it up, isn't enough.
Still a no? Call the maker's customer line, printed in your warranty book. Ford's and GM's books also name BBB AUTO LINE, a program that settles disputes outside of court. Ram's names the National Center for Dispute Settlement.

Quick Answers
Does a winch void my warranty?
No. Same rule as the bumper: the dealer has to show the winch, its wiring or the install caused the problem. Hook it up exactly as its instructions say, and keep them.
Does the dealer have to install it?
No. In the FTC's words: "You don’t have to use the dealer for repairs or maintenance to keep your warranty in effect." Your own garage or an independent shop is fine.
What about an extended warranty or a lease?
Those are separate contracts with their own rules. The FTC says an extended plan you buy separately is "not a warranty as defined by federal law". Read what your plan and your lease say about add-on parts.
Is it different for a work truck?
No. The FTC's own reading of the law covers pickups as a type, even one that only does work. Toyota's manual says its version of the rule doesn't cover a new truck bought only for business. If that's yours, check its warranty book.
Does the bumper have its own warranty?
Yes, from the company that builds it, not from your truck maker. Ranch Hand, Fab Fours and ADD, for example, cover defects in materials and workmanship. Read the terms for Ranch Hand, Steelcraft, Fab Fours, Hammerhead or ADD.
