Who Actually Builds Your Bumper

Your bumper has a return address. Ranch Hand welds in Shiner, Texas. Fab Fours builds in Lancaster, South Carolina. Hammerhead cuts its own steel in Bay Springs, Mississippi. Different companies, different buildings, different guys running the press.

That is worth saying out loud, because the easy guess is 1 shop, 1 welder and a rack of hats. It is not a dumb guess, either. It is close to what happened to the rest of your truck. The bed cover, the steps, the lift kit, most of that got bought up by a handful of big companies wearing a lot of logos.

Bumpers went the other way. Here is who stands behind each name on our shelf, what town the steel comes out of, and the 2 pairs of brands that turn out to share an owner.

Steelcraft and Frontier are the ones nobody bought. Steelcraft runs 3 plants of its own. Frontier still builds in the single shop it opened in 2001.

Hammerhead is the odd one, in a good way. It is a division of Hol-Mac Corporation, a private Mississippi steel fabricator that has been at it for more than 60 years, with 7 plants and over 800 people. Hammerhead started in 2008 because Hol-Mac employees liked their own steel and wanted bumpers made out of it. That is why the laser cutting, the forming and the welding all happen under one roof.

What Changes When a Big Company Buys the Brand

Not the plant. That is the part people get backwards.

Ranch Hand is the clearest case. It started in 1986 in Boerne, Texas. In 2000 it joined Kaspar, a Shiner family business that had been in that town since 1898. In April 2021 the family sold it to Lippert, a supplier big enough to trade on the New York Stock Exchange. Lippert's annual report puts the price at about $56.9 million for a shop selling roughly $49 million of steel a year. Nobody pays that for a logo. Lippert bought the plant in Shiner and the people in it. 5 years later the Ranch Hand site still says the same thing at the top: hand built in Shiner, Texas.

Fab Fours went the same way. Warn Industries bought it in August 2021 and runs it as a division. The bumpers are still designed, tested and built in Lancaster, South Carolina, in the plant Fab Fours had spent $5.7 million expanding a few years before the sale.

So what actually changed? Almost nothing you can see. The plant stayed, the people stayed, the product line stayed, and the company behind the name got a lot bigger. Nobody advertises that, because it sounds like accounting.

2 Names, 1 Owner

This is the part most buyers never notice.

Both pairs sit on our shelf, and it matters when you are building a front end around a winch. Put a Fab Fours bumper and a Warn winch on the same truck and you are buying the mount and the motor from 1 company. Same with a Westin bumper and a Superwinch. Both halves get drawn by people who sit in the same meetings, which is one less thing to measure twice.

It is not a rule. Plenty of guys run a Warn winch in a Ranch Hand bumper and never think about it again. Still, the Warn deal tells you something: a winch company went out and bought a bumper company.

Questions We Get

Are aftermarket bumper brands all made in the same factory? No. The brands above run their own plants in different states, and several of them cut, form, weld and coat under one roof. That is not how most truck accessory categories work, where a few big companies own a long list of names.

Does it matter who owns a bumper brand? For the steel coming off the line, no. For whether that name and its parts are still around in 10 years, yes. That is the part the owner decides.

Did Ranch Hand change after Lippert bought it? The plant, the town and the product line stayed the same. Lippert bought the Shiner operation in April 2021, and Ranch Hand still builds there. What changed is the size of the company behind the name.

Pick the Shop, Then Pick the Bumper

So what do you do with all this? If you are building around a winch, those owner pairs save you an argument about fitment. If you want a name with a public company standing behind it, that is Ranch Hand and Fab Fours.
